Update: As of 12th September 2008 "Economists" have been renamed "Accountants". They still function as described below, only their name is different.
The simple answer for 99 out of 100 Hattrick teams will be none - Economists are only useful in very specific financial circumstances.
Economists effect interest payments when in debt and interest receipts when in the black. However as with spokespersons the most important factor is not maximising income, it is maximising profit. For this reason you don't need to hire even one economist until you are either €270,000 in debt or have at least €4,800,000 in the bank.
